About Us ...
Apple Country Woodcrafters NPO was formed in 1985 to promote the craft of woodworking. Our club includes woodworkers from a variety of disciplines including wood turners, furniture makers, toy makers and wood carvers.
The club’s largest effort is building wooden toys for local disadvantaged children to brighten their holiday season. Distribution is handled by local agencies, including: Eliada Home, Craggy Correctional Center. Storehouse, Salvation Army, Children & Family Resource Center, Edneyville Lions Club, Fishes and Loaves, St. John of the Wilderness Church, Calvary Food Pantry, Hendersonville Rescue Mission, Blue Ridge Prison and Jail Ministries, Carolina Baptist Association, Helping Hand Development Center, and Boys & Girls Club.
Our membership includes people of all skill levels and experience, ranging from beginner to master. Some members use the shop for their own projects while some members choose to make toys in their home shops using club supplied materials. We also host group work sessions to produce toys. All are welcome to participate in these work sessions. Toys are the focus on Wednesdays but members’ personal projects are also welcome. The shop also hosts Open Carving sessions on Thursdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm for wood carvers. Toy making is the focus for Fridays from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.
Periodically, the club schedules educational workshops and field trips. Field trips have included saw mills, tool manufacturers, chair makers and woodcraft suppliers. Workshops have included safe operation of woodworking tools, joinery and cabinet making.
Club meetings are held the on the 4th Monday of each month at Grace Lutheran Church in Hendersonville at 1245 6th Avenue. Members meet to share ideas and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded individuals. Most meetings include a Show-and-Tell session and a Feature Presentation. The Show-and-Tell sessions items range from cutting boards, bowls, frames, and hand carved animals, to chairs, and chests. The Presentations segment feature a guest presenter that discuss and demonstrate a woodworking skill or topic. Past presentations have included wood movement in projects, marquetry, Windsor chair making, finishing and guitar making.
